Cr Egan, Deputy Mayor; Bunjil Ward councillor and PALS Facebook administrator, has decided to correct the record as to how Nillumbik came by its Green Wedge. We’re grateful for her sending it directly to us so we can share it with you.

So there you have it. You can forget about all that stuff in Council’s published documents which tell us about the “lungs of Melbourne”; “relief from the density of …built up suburbs”; “growth corridors separated from each other by green wedges”, including Rupert Hamer’s famous vision.

According to our Deputy Mayor, this is all wrong. She insists it was Eric Butler and a couple of other rural landowners who played a leading role in starting our green wedge!

We remain very sceptical about this, but perhaps Cr Egan has inside knowledge from her close associates who often speak of “land-owners’ rights”, a catch-cry which seems to fit with Eric Butler’s creation, the ”Australian League of Rights”. Yes, we looked up Eric Butler on Google as you can, but be prepared for some confronting information.

We’re afraid we cannot endorse Cr Egan’s controversial version of Green Wedge history.
